We are archives and local studies service for the historic county of Shropshire, which includes the borough of Telford and Wrekin.

We collect, preserve and share material relating to Shropshire’s past and present; meeting the needs and wants of current and future customers by sharing Shropshire’s stories.

Onsite, we have 6 miles of shelving, holding local material from 12th Century charters right up to recent newspapers.

We hold records of Shropshire Council, Telford and Wrekin Development Corporation and other local authorities, as well as the archives of courts, schools, hospitals, churches, groups, businesses, estates, families and individuals. We have a huge reference library of books written about or inspired by Shropshire.

Archives held here can be used for family history, local history, house history and the history of communities and groups. They can provide evidence of decision making and support archaeology, public enquiries and rights of way investigations. They can be used for school or university research. Archives can inspire artwork and creativity.

We are free to visit and around 6,000 people per year visit us, with many more across the world reaching us via our website, copying and research services. With the Museum Service, we provide a service for schools, as well as an outreach and events programme. We also have many opportunities for volunteers.

We help vulnerable and underrepresented groups of people living in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin to come together, get involved in and express themselves through music and experience the health and wellbeing benefits of music and the creative arts.

Activities and related benefits in our constitution:

1) Deliver music and creative arts services in local communities to reduce social isolation, increase social cohesion in the community, improve engagement and connection with others, improve wellbeing, develop social and communication skills and more…

2) Provide employment/volunteering opportunities and training to enable more people to deliver these services, and increase our impact locally.

Since incorporation in July 2019, we have developed and strengthened the following:

• Co-production i.e. community involvement in the design and delivery of our services;
• Our governance so we directly involve the community we serve;
• Realising the fact that – with the right support – local people have the skills and agency to make a real positive impact in their community;
• Alignment of our strategy and services with what the most marginalised and underrepresented groups of our community needs, recognising that designing services in this way will be the most inclusive, and benefit all.

Broseley Cinema show World Cinema films on a Friday evening once a month, and a free film once a month on a Tuesday afternoon. Both events are popular with local and nearby residents.

We have a full sized screen and the experience is equal to that of a ‘proper’ cinema. The hall is set out with tables and chairs and the bar is open throughout. This makes for a friendly, comfortable, café type atmosphere which seems to suit all who come along.

Next year a new venture: Film Festival!

Pentabus is the nation’s rural theatre company, based in Shropshire. We are the only rural touring company that is committed to producing new work & tours to communities across the UK and beyond.

Our work brings communities & young people together, bringing outstanding contemporary productions directly to isolated rural communities, as well as platforming rural stories in urban settings.

We are resident at Ludlow Assembly Rooms, enabling us to connect closely with communities and enable access to our engagement work. Over five decades we’ve produced over 300 new plays, supported over 220 playwrights and reached over half a million audience members.

We’ve won awards and created lasting relationships with artists, venues and audiences across the country, and were the first to live stream from a village hall.

We excel at finding & nurturing new talent & champion people of all ages to explore their creativity with particular emphasis on creating pathways into careers in the creative industries for those underrepresented, & people who live rurally under 30.

Pentabus Young Company is our initiative offering playwriting workshops in schools and further and higher education, work experience and mentorships, as well as the opportunity to join our Young Writers’ Programme.

Surge Forward delivers high-quality intercultural and cross genre collaborations. We create opportunities for established and marginalised talent from a wide range of communities and bring world-class culture from across the globe to local audiences.

We firmly believe in the power of music to transform lives, heal divisions and in the words of Duke Ellington “music washes away from the souls the dust of everyday life”.

Surge was formed in 2003 by composer-musician Sid Peacock with a commission from Brum legend Paul Murphy to mark Birmingham’s St Patricks’ Day. It expanded over time into Surge Orchestra with concerts featuring up to 25 musicians. In 2019 we developed Surge Forward Music and Arts CIC in order to take our work further. The name is inspired by the Birmingham motto of “Forward”.
